NAPIT explores new technologies for World Health & Safety at Work Day 2025

Today (April 28th) marks World Health & Safety at Work Day 2025. The theme this year is revolutionising health and safety: the role of AI and digitalisation at work. This theme will focus on the impacts of digitalisation and AI on workers’ safety and health.

This theme is particularly relevant to tradespeople who are adapting to the growing role of smart technology, automation and AI-driven compliance tools. It’s crucial to recognise how digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping the electrical industry.

AI and digital tools bring clear benefits, helping to streamline compliance, reduce paperwork and enhance accuracy.  From AI-assisted certification platforms to smart diagnostic systems, technology is making it easier to deliver safe, high-quality work.

However, these advancements also introduce new challenges. The pressure to stay up to date with evolving systems can lead to stress, fatigue and uncertainty, particularly around job security and the need for continuous upskilling.

Additionally, increased reliance on digital communication can blur the boundaries between work and personal life, impacting mental well-being and professional relationships. Instead of seeing digitalisation as a challenge, NAPIT members can take practical steps to protect their well-being while embracing new technology:

  1. Staying informed

As AI and automation continue to develop, keeping up with industry changes will be essential. Proactively seeking out relevant information, peer discussions, and independent learning can help members feel updated, informed & confident rather than overwhelmed.

  1. Work-Life balance

Digitalisation should work for you, not against you. Setting clear boundaries – such as managing screen time, limiting out-of-hours communication and prioritising rest – can help prevent confusion, burnout and digital fatigue.

  1. AI is not a replacement

While AI can automate certain tasks, it doesn’t replace the experience, expertise and decision-making of skilled and qualified professionals. Members can focus on the use of AI to reduce admin workload, allowing more time for on-site work, safety assessments and customer service.

  1. Mental Wellbeing

Open conversations about mental health and workplace challenges are more important than ever. Whether through industry networks, online forums or peer support, staying connected and talking freely can help reduce isolation and promote resilience.

NAPIT remains committed to supporting the industry as it navigates the opportunities and challenges of digitalisation. By taking a solution-focused approach, members can embrace innovation in a way that enhances both safety and job satisfaction.

NAPIT Commercial and Compliance Director, Stephen Melton, said: “It’s important to embrace digitalisation in a way that enhances, rather than undermines, the wellbeing of our members & industry professionals. By focusing on smart integration, work-life balance and proactive learning, members can ensure that innovation works in their favour, helping them work smarter, not harder.”
